People: Daryllynn Nelson
Daryllyn is a medical student and one of the brightest personalities I know.
Name one person, place or thing that inspires you the most?
My inspiration comes from my father. I am a complete daddy's girl and it's the honest truth! My father has had to deal with cancer at a young age and still make a decent lifestyle for us. After his surgery he was cancer free, however like many cases of this disease it came back. Since then he's been undergoing chemotherapy to aggressively get rid of his bone cancer. Even dealing with cancer for the last 10 years he has never once complained, looked for sympathy, nor felt sorry for the life God is giving him. Through it all his smile still lights up a room and his spirit still strong.
One thing most people don't know about you?
Not many people know that I am a complete nerd! I honestly spend my spare time reading Scientific America watching the history channel and discovery health. I am totally satisfied with spending my day doing nothing but science!
How do you stay healthy shape?
I was definitely one of those women who did not like to sweat or feel pain, so needless to say exercising was not one of my priorities. However, when my boyfriend and I got together we wanted to have not only an healthy emotional relationship but be physically fit. We changed our eating habits, used health apps on our iPhones and exercised everyday. I workout doing Pilates and yoga while he does p90x. It has definitely helped that we both want to be healthy together.
Is there a moment/event that changed the path of who are today?
Spelman College! I am a Spelman woman ALL the way! Spelman instilled in me the confidence that I needed to pursue my goal of becoming a physician. It has given me drive, integrity, and increased my intelligence by challenging me in every aspect of my life.
What is the best advice you could give someone?
The best advice I could give someone is to travel your own path. Sometimes your friends seem to be moving faster then you but ITS OK! Don't be jealous and never compare yourself. Your journey is unique, just like you. You will accomplish and be successful in the time that God wants you to, so just do your best!
Favorite food?
My favorite food is Mexican! For the last 20 years of my life I've always had Mexican food on every birthday.
One word to describe yourself?
Tenacious!
What do you want your contribution to this world to be?
The contribution I would love to leave in the world is that I cared for people as if they were my family or close friends. I believe that kindness and care will not only help a person physically but also mentally.
