Your Assignment Is Your Adventure

Sometimes I think about the many mysteries of the planet. I am always in shock at how much it takes for me to even get up in the morning. Every night we fall into a coma that is similar to death, our bodies completely shut down conscious brain functioning we even go into muscle paralysis. We require a constant flow of air that is dependant on the chemical balance of the atmosphere. There are so many atoms and particles that make up everything we see. There is constant movement and science in simple things like opening our eyes or taking in a deep breath or simply watching a bird fly in the sky. All of these miracles and mysteries are often looked over as common place. We take for granted the wondrous nature of the monotony that we see daily and become complacent in our amazement. For me all these things point to a creator, God; whose wisdom can only make such complicated things function so simply.

I love the scripture in Matthew 6:26 where Jesus ask the question “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” If the miracles that exist in nature are so much more infinitely miraculous and wise then how much more of a life does he have for us. I began to zero in on how much of an adventure my life has been in the most simple ways God has turned ordinary things into extraordinary things through my obedience to his will. A simple grocery store trip becomes an adventure when God tells me to give an elderly woman waiting for a cab a ride home, or he prompts me to give a stranger a gift card for food or he shows me the cashier’s heart and ask me to pray for her. Living life open to the voice of God keeps our lives adventurous. We become inner workings of a the simplistic beautiful plan of the kingdom of God; the same way nature does every day.

I have gone through darker seasons where I turned that voice down and life began to grind me down. I would get so irritated and thrown off when someone would cut me off in traffic, or the line was too long at the store or when coworker said something I didn’t like. Those things seem so insignificant when you are in the midst of an assignment and you are tuned into the voice of God leading you and guiding your path.

God has led me around the world to various countries. He has made me a missionary right where I live engaging with my community in random and amazing ways. He makes every single day and adventure when I hang up my own will and put his on. I love the quote by Thomas Merton theologian and Trappist Monk which says ““Life is this simple: we are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and the divine is shining through it all the time. This is not just a nice story or a fable, it is true.” Our adventure begins when we look past the daily ordinary and see the divine. The beautiful thing is we can start our adventures right now!
